With “International Love Data Week” rapidly approaching (February 12-16), I decided to use a publicly available AI tool to quickly and simply create an image reminding everyone of the event. After all, AI is one of the most important uses of data as AI = data + an algorithm (more to come on this in future blog posts). Perfect, right? I could even announce that the next entry for my Data Connections blog would be released to tie in with the event.
Once I got started, I realized that creating this image would be neither quick nor simple. It made me once again question how readily many people assume AI will be dominating humans, at least for the foreseeable future.
To start, I will share my tips on using these public AI systems and then get into the details. If you are planning to use AI to, let’s say dominate the planet, you should ask yourself a few basic questions. For example: will this domination require images, or is text alone fine? Do you have enough credits with the relevant AI system to dominate the planet? Is spelling important for your planetary domination and how about contextual understanding?
These questions apply to usage of publicly available AI for any purpose (e.g., creating my International Love Data Week image) so, if you have plans to use ChatGPT, of DALL-E or Microsoft Image Creator for any reason, read on.
Use AI to create an image … easy, right?
I started with my old standby ChatGPT. My prompt was:
Oh yes…. reminder to self: if AI is going to rule over us someday, it will need to be a text-based domination if ChatGPT is involved.
Okay, I want an image. But now I am curious. What would ChatGPT come up with? So, I reworked the prompt and here is what I got:
Not bad, though most of that is way more than I intended to do (i.e., Webinars & Workshops, Data Challenges, etc.). I am just working to promote awareness.
Now, where can I go for an International Love Data Week image? Hmmm, how about DALL-E? That system has done some nice stuff for me before. So, I jumped over to try it:
Out of credits! Reminder to self #2: if AI is going to rule over us someday, I am going to need to buy A LOT more credits to communicate with it.
Alright, the third time’s a charm, I hope! How about I try Microsoft Image Creator? I have not used this system before but have heard good things. So, I start with the prompt:
And, in very literal fashion, I get several images all expressly saying, “Create an image advertising international love data week.” And most of the images I got seemed more about Valentine’s Day (romantic) type love than the more abstract love of data. Here is an example:
The mis-spelling of “international” seems to be a system generated error that I could not eliminate even after multiple tries.
At this point, you might think I would give up. But I am a determined person and, if AI is to be our overlord someday, I need to figure it out.
Back to the drawing board, I rework my prompt to eliminate the “create an image” language and say:
The first option I got goes back to a “romantic love” vision that is not what I am going for:
Can you imagine? “Darling my love for you is all about the data….” Not sure how that would go over.
Oh, and “international” is again misspelled. My fear of AI dominance is wavering.
Just to see what would happen, I ran the same prompt again. No text came up on this one … so no spelling errors. Also, it seemed to finally (sort of) connect data and love without the creepy over-reach into romance:
Even though it is not perfect (and I had to give up on text + an image), I am fairly happy with this version.
Happy International Love Data Week everyone! I hope you found my path to the (mostly) successful creation of this image useful. Keep an eye out for my next more serious Data Connections blog entry next week and rest safe in the knowledge that, since it took over an hour to finally generate a simple image using AI, I do not have the time to attempt domination of the planet anytime soon.
